Cafe Degan

Last month, I took a short trip to Bali with my parents. As soon as we landed and checked in at our hotel, we went to the first place on my list for dinner. Located at Petitenget street, Cafe Degan is designed in joglo style (an antique wooden Javanese house). With high exposed ceiling and dim lighting, the place looked humble and friendly. I’ve heard many rave reviews about this place, saying that they serve delicious Thai dishes and also have a good selection of desserts from a small pastry shop at the front of the building.
Cafe Degan actually offered Indonesian and Thai dishes, but as I’ve already made up my mind to try their Thai dishes, I ordered: som tam gai yang (spicy green papaya salad served with marinated grilled chicken skewer) 55K, tom yam goong(hot and sour prawn soup) 55K and gai phad met mamuang himmapaon (stir fried chicken with cashew nut, onion, capsicum and dry chili) 65K. Overall, I loved all of the dishes. The papaya salad had the right spiciness and tanginess with a tender and well marinated grilled chicken satay. The tom yam goong was of the clear soup type, but tasted so good. The cashew nut chicken also tasted delicious. The only sour note was that my lemongrass ice tea has very little lemongrass flavor in it.

After that I couldn’t resist ordering the flourless chocolate cake 48K, served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was delicious. I liked the spongy texture of the chocolate cake, while my mom cleaned up the vanilla ice cream. Overall, we’re quite satisfied with our dinner that night and I really hope that I can return with SC to taste their other delicacies.
